Despite the rain, plant walk at Joas a big hit!

Thanks to everyone who came out for our plant walk on the Joas Preserve with River Prairie Apothecary’s master herbalist Kerri Kiernan. Despite a bit of rain at the beginning we observed many different species of trees and plants, learned about wild edibles and medicinal plants and enjoyed the beauty of the preserve while the day turned bright and sunny. Note the incredibly large white pines in the pictures. Always worth the hike to see them!

We discovered Hedgehog mushrooms which are also called the “safer Chanterelle” and learned about the different types of cherry trees and the potential uses for their berries. We spotted native species like Lead Plant and Blazing Star and learned about invasive plants like Japanese Barberry. Interestingly, Japanese Barberry has berberine in it which is a natural compound found in many plants. This compound is known to have several potential health benefits.

Our thanks to Kerri for her knowledge and expertise and for leading us on a very informative and enjoyable hike.
